my main goal is to become a RN .. i will settle for a lpn for now but i want to atleast be qualified as a nurse. I want to go into the military because of the benefits. What do i do before and after basic training to make sure i get the job i want if its available?
The answer lies with the air force recruiter, That person is supposed to know all the proper answers to put you on the right track as to where you want to go.
Talk to a recruiter. Don’t sign anything yet, but just ask questions. I was in the ARMY and I will be more than glad to tell ya that a recruiter will lie in a heartbeat…so just keep on your toes.
RN’s are always in demand, be aggressive in your desire to become an RN when you talk to the recruiter……..
The 3 enlisted Air Force jobs that are the equivalent to an LPN are AFSC’s :
4J0X2 – PHYSICAL MEDICINE
4N0X1 – AEROSPACE MEDICAL SERVICE
4N1X1 – SURGICAL SERVICE
The military no no direct equivalent to an LPN, but those 3 are close.
To be an RN, you will need a 4 year University Degee in Nursing.
The first thing is that there are usually no guarantees unless they are short handed in a career field. Having said that, check with your local recruiter and see if they have anything that guarantees training in the: 4N0X1 Medical Service
4N1X1 Surgical Service
career fields.
Medical Corpsmen are equivalent to LPN’s in training. The good news is that if you excel they may put you on a path to Physician’s Assistant (PA) which should give you a leg up on a better job in civilian life. Good Luck.
RN’s because of their education requirements are Commissioned Officers so you have to be an RN before you go in.

See a recruiter and find out if you can. If not walk away. No commitment necessary to find out, but may require some effort/testing on your part and a physical.
