Horrific Uti Or Kidney Infection: Doctors & Nurses Advice Please!?

I went to the Doctor, because I had severe bloating and pressure in my stomach. It also burned the tiniest bit when I peed. I tested positive for a UTI. They gave me antibiotics. Two days after I finished the meds I felt better. Two days later I was hit with it all over again. I want back to the doctor and did another urine test. My urine was dark brown. The nurse actually came back in to my room and asked me if I was on my period. I told her no. Then I got scared. My doctor thinks that I had two infections, one was killed the other was not. She sent out my urine for a culture. The results won’t be back until Monday. She prescribed Cipro, which is making me vomit horribly, so she is going to give me a different antibiotic. The pain in my stomach and back is so awful. She prescribed me vicadin, which makes the pain go away, but I am scared. What is wrong with me? I’m not peeing much either, but I am drinking water. Is this normal? Am I ok? If I went to the hospital would they be faster?

You doctor is doing the right thing. Cipro is an antibiotic that is generally prescribed for UTI’s although it is very strong and can upset your stomach. A culture (whether done at a hospital or elsewhere) does take time. They have to set up the culture and then have to wait for it to grow. When they do the culture they also do what is called a sensitivity. When the report comes back it will not only tell them what bacteria caused the infection but will also tell them which antibiotic that bacteria is “sensitive” to.
Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and try cranberry juice, it does help to relieve some of the symptoms but won’t cure it.
Don’t stress now, go with what your doctor is doing. He is doing everything in the right order.

It sounds like you had a UTI, which continued up your renal tract into your kidneys. This condition is called Nephritis. Cipro is a strong broad spectrum antibiotic, which would work in this case. However, since you’re sensitive to it, they will prescribe you an alternative. No problem. Vicodin is a narcotic analgesic (a strong pain killer), do not take this or ANY antibiotic on an empty stomach, this could be what was making you vomit. Take it with crackers if you have to. You should also be drinking at least 6-8oz glasses of water per day too, to flush out your kidneys! Don’t worry sweetie, hang in there, you’ll start feeling better soon!!

I hate to give advice against your MD but if what you are saying is 100% true I would go to the ER. Sounds like high amounts of blood in your urine. Your Urine output is low. That is what concerns me. What is your intake of fluids when you say you have been drinking lots of water? Over 64oz? How much are you urinating? less than every 2 hours? Are you swelling anywhere? Feet, ankles, face? You could have a build up creatinine in your system. Your kidneys are not filtrating waste properly.
Kidneys regulate Blood pressure, sugar, get rid of waste.
How is your Blood Pressure? Are you diabetic? Do you smoke? Quit smoking if you do? Did they draw labs? Have them draw a BMP. They should have made you do a 24 hour urine speciman to see what you were taking in and putting out. Checking the ceatinine in your system. My advice Get your butt to the ER stat! Do not wait for your labs.
You have to be proactive with your own health. Drs do make mistakes. They are not perfect. If you feel that you should go to the hospital GO GO GO. It is your life! That is where I would be.
It could just be a VERY bad kidney infection but why risk it.
Good luck email me or update here and let us know what happened!
Ok who cares about insurance. They will send you a bill. You make payment arrangements They have to accept as little as 20 a month.
Here is a good site to go to to check your symptoms
google symptom checker make sure it is for the mayo clinic they look for what applies to you. It cannot be used to diagnose but may be able to give you a general idea

Your doctor is going about it on the right track, i know its painful and it really blows but they are doing everything they can. make sure u drink LOTS of fluids, cranberry juice is prob. your best bet along with alot of water. if your not urinating then you have to stay hydrated. vicodin will kill alot if not all of the pain. As soon as your culture is done im sure they will do what they need to do to meet your expectations
